Shanti Nilayam Abbey

MARIA ROSA MYSTICA MONASTERY
DIOCESE OF DINDIGUL.

Maria Rosa Mystica, Benedictine Contemplative Nuns-Dindigal-Tamil Nadu.

In 1995 Brother Aruputham a Sacred Heart Brother asked Mother Abbess Teresita D’Silva to start a Benedictine monastery in Dindigul, his native place.  Every year he used to come here and  remind our Mother Abbess about it.  The Sacred Heart Brothers are the neighbours of Shanti Nilayam Abbey, Bangalore. He had a great devotion to Maria Rosa Mystica and had built a shrine near his home.  He was very helpful to us at Shanti Nilayam in the early years.  In his old age he spread the devotion to Our Lady of Maria Rosa Mystica.  He  invited our Mother Abbess to see the land there.  At that time Dindigal was in the diocese of Trichy. When our Mother Abbess met the bishop of Trichy, he told our Mother Abbess that Dindigul would soon be an independent diocese. Bro.Aruputham asked us again to approach the new bishop of Dindigul. Bro . Aruputham went to his reward in 2005.

In 2010 Mr.Joshua a teacher from Dindigul informed us that the Dindigul Bishop wanted contemplative Nuns to start a monastery in his diocese.  Our  Mother Abbess went to Dindigul to meet  the Bishop and to negotiate about starting a monastery. There was a clergy home for retired priests close to the Bishop’s house which was vacant so the Bishop invited us to make a start in this house.

On 7th December 2011 our Mother Abbess went with 3 Nuns to Dindigul.   On 8th December the Solemnity  of Immaculate Conception, Bishop celebrated Holy Mass for our sisters. The diocese of Dindigul  is working at all levels to establish more religious houses and parishes, institutions, schools etc. Above all to bring the people to deep faith in Christ.

The diocese gave us 5 acres of good land, which has been registered in our name. The land is situated 10 minutes walk from the Bishop’s house. Bishop Antony Pappusawmy is a good and holy man who has great faith in prayer. He appreciates our contemplative life and wants us to pray for the diocese.  He also wants us to make Altar Bread, Sacramental wine and Candles.  We pray the Divine Office 7 times a day. We pray for the  needs of the world and especially for  our Diocese.     The New Monastery was blessed on 3rd Dec 2014 under the Patronage of Maria Rosa Mystica.
